Goal :

To read Books 1-56 in the Nancy Drew series that have the yellow spines in 2010.

A list of the books can be found here http://www.nancydrewsleuth.com/mysterystories.html

Today when I decided to go shopping with my sister , we  had no intention of a detour to the bookstore but it’s all pre written, destined  as  they say 🙂 and we happened to come across a second-hand bookstore ,just like that.  Out of curiosity we went in. Now , I will save you the rest of my tiresome story telling and tell you what we bought 🙂

If I had known I could get such great books at throwaway prices, I wouldn’t have spent a chunk of my salary on the books I got for myself last month. (though with tattered covers and some pencil scribblings and ink blots these books are good bargains as they don’t have these in my library  . Just wait till I figure out who  all had owned  these book  previously, then I am going to  go and give them my often repeated  lecture  on how to treat  books. )

This book store was a treasure trove and I am definitely going there for more , lot more . Now, between us we bought 15 great  books for about 1000 bucks. Can you believe that.( Here , we get new books for an amount of  400 or more each book , rarely less than 200 bucks ) Money well spent I must say .

Only thing was we just rushed to our room with the bag . Otherwise we would have to hear about how we are taking up all the  shelf space in the house by buying more and more books when we have enough for a lifetime  🙂

Suzanne’s Diary For Nicholas by James Patterson

Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie

The Death Of Ivan Lynch and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy (this is the one with lots of ink blots )

The Gravedigger’s Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates ( earlier owner’s name written all over the cover and over the top of the pages 😦 Don’t like it when anyone does that )

How I Taught My Grandmother And Other Stories by Sudha Murthy ( In great condition , looks new)

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby ( Pages are coming apart but I wanted to read this one 🙂  )

Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry ( I guess this had more than one owner )

Dollar Bahu by Sudha Murthy ( Cover is come off 😦  )

Love In The Time Of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The Birth Of Venus by Sarah Dunant ( This was the costliest book , in excellent condition)

Rape , A Love Story by Joyce Carol Oates ( My guess is they read it while eating , food stains  )

Gathering by Anne Enright ( Previous owner has even made notes 🙂 )

Chasing Harry Winston by Lauren Weisberger (  Sis got this and has already started reading )

Sisters by Danielle Steel ( This is again my sister’s book , I might borrow it from here )

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks ( Tattered pages , scribbling all over the top columns but I wanted to read it and my library didn’t have this , so I got it )

Book :After The Wreck,I Picked Myself Up, Spread My Wings And Flew Away by Joyce Carol Oates

From the dust jacket :

In the raw was how the world felt now. My feelings were raw, my thoughts were raw and hurtful like knife blades. . . . In the blue had been my place to hide, now In the raw there was nowhere to hide.

Jenna Abbott separates her life into two categories: before the wreck and after the wreck. Before the wreck, she was leading a normal life with her mom in suburban New York. After the wreck, Jenna is alone, trying desperately to forget what happened that day on the bridge. She’s determined not to let anyone get close to her—she never wants to feel so broken and fragile again.

Then Jenna meets Crow. He is a powerfully seductive enigma, and Jenna is instantly drawn to him. Crow is able to break down the wall that Jenna has built around her emotions, and she surprises herself by telling him things she hasn’t told anyone else. Can Jenna bring herself to face the memories she’s tried so hard to erase?

My Review:

After reading Joyce Carol Oates’s We Were The Mulvaneys , I wanted to read more of her books. Though I had a lots of choices I picked up this one as it was targeted towards Young Adults. I am getting attracted to YA books lately and also because I had heard that this book goes at an amazing speed . Just because it is a fast read doesn’t make it a light read.

I liked the way Jenna’s feelings were portrayed . The guilt about being alive, thought of having to live with her estranged father and his new family, thoughts of leaving the home she shared with her mom and all the security she felt before the wreck which she sees dwindling away. Jenna’s inner voice was unique. She knows what lies ahead of her and is also head strong about her choices.A quality not very common in teenagers and that too in  the ones who have gone through such a  devastating accident.

Jenna’s attraction towards Crow was given a very mature treatment . Her mistrust for everyone else who isn’t her  and her eventual transition to learning to trust and open up to Crow made it a recommendable book to all YA fans.

I must say I was very surprised (though pleasantly) with the way , she ended the book. Wasn’t something I had expected but still something very honest and real .  I can’t wait to read another book written by Joyce Carol Oates.

Highly recommended

Where do I find these ?

Before I started blogging , my reading choices were very limited to classics  , chick lit  and some much hyped bestsellers . After  seeing the reading lists of other book  bloggers I realised ,what I had been  missing  all these years. I started trying new genre, new authors and I must say I am very happy I discovered book blogging community.

One such book series I have discovered through the  blogosphere is The  Baby Sitter’s Club. The enthusiastic Amy from My Friend Amy’s blog recommended this series to all her readers which  made me go and find it in my library.I must say , now I understand why Amy was recommending it so highly. Within 2 days I am done with 2 books :)It is a young adult series but I am enjoying it .

I desperately want to read more of this series  and soon but the  problem is that my library just had two books in the series  and now I am stuck 😦

Where do I find the rest of the series ?  😦  😦 I guess it’s time for another trip to the book store .

Ok, so what if  I took up another challenge ? Do I hear you laughing there ? ( talking to you Veens)  I just couldn’t resist. 🙂  I love YA books and I successfully completed this challenge in 2009 and I think I can very well finish this in 2010.So here I am signing up for Young Adult Book Challenge 2009 hosted by J.Kaye . This year some new guidelines have been made . We can sign up for one of the 4 levels.I am signing up for level 2.
