Emma Vol 1 by Kaoru Mori:

Set in Victorian England this books traces the life of a young kind-hearted ,intelligent maid Emma . William, a young aristocratic lad falls in love with the beautiful Emma and she too starts developing feelings towards him. But they are on either ends of the social ladder which makes it a twisty situation.

This is book was my first attempt at graphic novels thanks to Alyce from At Home With Books for the recommendation. I must say that not only are the illustrations beautiful but also the life in Victorian Era has been depicted very beautifully. It is a very easy read and also very enjoyable. This is an ongoing series so I am yet to discover what happens  to the love birds eventually.

People who love historical romances or Georgette Heyer type of regency romances will love this series. If  you are new to graphic novel genre then this would be a great start.

Highly recommended.

My rating : 4.5 out of 5

My reviews of Emma Vol 2, 3 , 4 will be posted  soon

From the author’s website:

The first book in the Bride Quartet—following the lives and loves of four friends who run Vows, a wedding-planning company. Wedding photographer Mackensie “Mac” Elliot is most at home behind the camera, but her focus is shattered moments before an important wedding rehearsal when she bumps into the bride-to-be’s brother…an encounter that has them both seeing stars.

A stable, safe English teacher, Carter Maguire is definitely not Mac’s type. But a casual fling might be just what she needs to take her mind off bridezillas. Of course, casual flings can turn into something more when you least expect it. And Mac will have to turn to her three best friends—and business partners—to see her way to her own happy ending.

My Views:

I rarely indulge into romantic novels these days but reading this book,I realized why I used to love reading romances. They are just like comfort food. A place to go when you are feeling low . Nora Roberts Vision In White is one such comfort reading book.

The girls Parker, Laurel, Emma and Mac are so much fun to read about. Each has a different area of excellence but they blend in to create the most perfect weddings people dream about. Though this book is about Mac, the wedding photographer and her love life ,you can’t help but fall in love with the world Nora Roberts creates. Friends who not only stand by one another at the time of need but also know when the other one needs you even though it is unspoken request. They are there for each other. The conversations are funny , witty , very contemporary and totally spontaneous. Did I use too many adjectives 🙂 But this book deserves the praise.

At a point I felt that Mac’s story could be have been fine focused on a little more. But  the book forwards at a good pace and you hardly have time to find faults. The creative , impulsive Mac with a calm and mature Carter suited well for the story.Minor sub plots like Mac and her mother and  also the whole wedding planning business were so well merged in this story that nothing jarred at any point. I am speaking for myself here, others might have a different opinion.

I would love to know what happens with the rest of the girls and how they get their happy ever after in the coming books.

If you need a book to relax and rejuvenate yourself, look no further.

Highly Recommended

Can’t wait to read the next book in the series, which is about Emma .”Bed Of Roses”

Book : Oliver’s Story by Erich Segal

Category : Romance ( Not exactly)

Protagonist: Oliver Barrett IV

Summary of the book : from the dust jacket of the book

Oliver Barrett IV found the love of his life in Jenny Cavilleri. And though the time they spent together was brief, it was enough to last a lifetime. Or so Oliver told himself. Living without her for two years now, he still believes he will never love again. Until the day he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman, and suddenly the future seems very different than Oliver thought it would be.

Things I liked about this book: ( Can’t say I liked any thing so I am just giving my views )

I wanted to like this book , I really did . I had absolutely loved Love Story ( ya,ya I know , the tear jerking romantic story ) I knew this book couldn’t be as phenomenal as Love Story. Some books have that kind of impact but I had definitely expected something atleast close to the first book.I was throughly disappointed.

The book fell short on reasoning and realism. As a reader I just couldn’t identify with Oliver’s decisions. He was too much in love with his first wife Jenny  , granted .But he doesn’t want to take a step forward in to a new life. He doesn’t realise that not every person is alike  and not every girl is Jenny. Oliver just couldn’t handle the fact that Marcie has different prioroties in life. All he does is try to find her  in Marcie. I would have left the book within a few pages , had it not been for the curiosity of knowing what happens to Oliver eventually.  Wrong decision Shona. Should have left the book at the time I thought I had enough of over the board romance and cheesy emotions  🙂 Take my advice , go read Love Story and forget that the book has any sequel . Ok?

On my rating scale : 2 out of 5 ( I would have said 1 but Erich Segal is one of my fav authors)

Challenges for which the book is listed : None
